Presentation

This is basically an academic and research programme providing postgraduate training in a variety of areas of theoretical and applied linguistics and which feeds lines of doctoral research in these fields as well as in computational linguistics and discourse analysis. The master's degree also has a professional aspect associated, above all, with language learning and lexicography and terminology.

Objectives

To provide students with solid specialized training in linguistics, possessing the knowledge and skills to carry out research or professional tasks in theoretical linguistics or in applied linguistics.

Specialities

  • Acquisition and learning (language acquisition and language learning)
  • Lexicon (lexicology, lexicography and terminology)
  • Formal linguistics (Formal and descriptive linguistics and variation)

Teaching load of each course type

  • Research
Students must take 20 credits corresponding to the Master's degree final project and 10 credits corresponding to research methodology; the remaining 30 credits are, usually, for common advanced training subjects and speciality subjects.
  • Academic
Students must take 10 credits corresponding to the Master's degree final project and 10 credits corresponding to research methodology; there are thirty 30 credits which correspond, usually, to common advanced training subjects and speciality subjects; the remaining 10 credits are optional.
  • Professional
Students must take 19 credits corresponding to the internship, 6 credits corresponding to the Master's degree final project and 5 credits corresponding to research methodology; the remaining 30 credits are, usually, for common advanced training subjects and speciality subjects.

Contents

Training units are either methodological (providing tools to carry out future research or professional activities), or deal with common advanced training (providing the theoretical and descriptive bases of the different components comprising the advanced study of language), or they are specialization units (pursuing one of the branches of theoretical or applied linguistics in greater depth).

Internship

In the professional course type, 19 credits must be taken corresponding to the external internship.

Career prospects

Graduates may choose to work as expert linguists in companies, institutions and other bodies and will have the skills to become part of interdisciplinary teams in a wide variety of areas: educational institutions, health, legal and publishing institutions, and so on.
