Teaching Experience
I am originally from Washington, DC. and still go there often to visit my family. My interest in languages (specifically French and Japanese) initially brought me to Japan in 1990, where I worked as an English teacher for three years in a teaching exchange program. From there I went on to Paris to complete a master’s degree in French philology, and then in 1996, as luck would have it, I settled in a country where neither French nor Japanese are spoken. I have been here ever since, and currently teach at Pompeu Fabra University and ESADE University.
What does teaching languages mean to you?
I remember studying French in high school as an excruciatingly boring exercise in conjugating verbs and memorizing vocabulary lists. It wasn’t until my first Japanese class in university that I realized that learning a language could be a dynamic experience that had as its main goal communication between people. I try to continue this spirit in my classes. Teaching a language is a creative challenge to find ways of blending fun and hard work.
