Romanesque art was the first medieval artistic movement to spread internationally across Europe. It was the cultural expression of Christianity between the moddle ages. In Catalonia
this movement spreaded between the 11th and 13th century in the areas "liberated" from the
islam. Most of these masterpieces in architecture, fresco painting or sculture are located in small
villages at the hart of the Pyrenees.
In the late nineteenth century, Catalan nationalist requiered that the craddle of the nation were preserved and some of these churches were restored and its fresco moved to museums in Barcelona.
" The frescoes, sculptures, and architectural detail of these early Pyrenean churches were, as we shall see later a continous inspiration to nineteenth-centuru Catalan architects: Puig i Cadafach, Domènech i Montaner, and of course Antoni Gaudí"
