Linguistic security

Linguistic security is an essential concept in the process of introducing multilingualism in UPF, as it is the foundation guaranteeing that academic activities will be carried out, at all times and irrespective of the circumstances, in the language in which it was announced they would be taught and that this language choice will not be changed under any circumstances nor be open to negotiation between students and teaching staff, precisely because this would create linguistic insecurity.

In accordance with the linguistic security principle, academic activities must be conducted and course materials, including examination questions, distributed, throughout their entire duration, in the language indicated beforehand. A direct consequence of this principle is that the teaching language is public information that is binding and must be known sufficiently in advance by all concerned.

Since the introduction of the Plan of Action for Multilingualism (2007), UPF's governing bodies have been working to ensure the transparency of the information regarding publication of the teaching languages, with linguistic security as the ultimate objective. With a view to making certain that the linguistic security principle is effective and is actually adhered to, appropriate mechanisms will be put in place to detect at all times any breaches and channel any possible problems through the respective dean's office or department, and/or the rector's delegate for linguistic promotion.
