Pompeu Fabra University has kept a record of language data concerning teaching since 1990, when the University was first established.
The methodology employed for obtaining the data has changed gradually over time. It is a complex process that is constantly being reviewed and improved, in which a many factors and variables need to be taken into account.
To begin with, this information was supplied by the teaching staff on each of the courses via their respective administrative units. Now language data are drawn from a software application in which the secretaries' offices have entered information about the teaching staff and the language used in teaching.
In general, courses such as Translation and Interpretation, which by their very nature are multilingual, are excluded. Hitherto, the final percentage was based on theory groups. However, in view of the changes brought about by the European Higher Education Area, as of 2009-2010 the overall percentage is based on hours of theory.

* From the beginning until the year 2008-2009, the percentages refer to theory groups.
** For technical reasons, in 2008-2009, in addition to Catalan, Spanish and English, a multilingual group was created comprising groups with more than one teaching language. That is why the percentage of Catalan fell considerably.
