Published the second edition of the Diccionari de la llengua catalana by the Institute for Catalan Studies
Coinciding with the centenary of the creation of the Institute for Catalan Studies, a few days ago the second edition of the Diccionari de la llengua catalana, the normative reference work for the Catalan language, was published. Twelve years after the publication of the first edition [http://pdl.iec.es/entrada/diec.asp] of this work, heir to the Diccionari general de la llengua catalana (1932) by Pompeu Fabra, this second edition contains a total of 69,988 entries, 2,422 more than in the first edition. On the other hand, 6,234 new examples have been introduced (now there are 50,234 against 44,000 in the first edition), due to the interest they have for the nonspecialized users. On the other hand, ideological neutrality has been pursued in fields such as religion or gender treatment, and at the same time the totality of the territorial variants of the language have been considered. With regard to the different meanings of the entries, that now appear numbered, they have gone from 120,000 to 132,460, and the specialized lexicon has been increased significantly. The revision of this lexicon has been carried out by 117 experts, and as a result 1,994 new entries have been added, out of the 3,564 proposals of addition reviewed, while 700 entries out of the 1,153 ones studied have been removed. Furthermore, the spelling of 65 entries has been modified.
The volume has been published by Edicions 62 and Enciclopèdia Catalana; 30,000 copies have been printed, and in the future it will be possible to consult it through the Internet. Once this project has been taken to an end, the Institute for Catalan Studies will devote its efforts to finishing the new Catalan grammar, which is to be published by 2009.
