Course Structure

All HESP courses are 45 hours (4 hours per week) except for the Spanish language courses, which are 90 hours (12.5 hours per week during the first two weeks, and 6 hours a week until the end of the term). Classes usually have a maximum of 35 students (15 in language courses) and a minimum of 10.

HESP organizes courses at three different periods throughout the school year:

Fall semester: September-December

Spring semester: January-May

Summer program: June-July

The UPF academic year is divided into three terms. The first two of them correspond approximately to the HESP semesters, a fact that allows students to join both.

Academic Requirements

In order to apply for the Study Abroad Program, students should satisfy the following criteria:

· Be currently a junior year student in higher education institution
· Have a minimum of a cumulative 3.0 GPA (of a 4.0 scale) or equivalent
· A minimum of one college level Spanish semester in their home university
· A letter from their home university certifying that the courses taken at UPF will be transferred to the student's academic file

Assessment

Assessment is semi-continuous and is based on the following parameters:

Class participation: 15%
Mid-term examination: 25%
Course work: 30%
Final examination: 30%

In some cases, this system will be adapted to the needs and characteristics of the course, but the same criterion of semi-continuous assessment will be followed.

UPF uses a numeric grading system of a 10 scale. HESP recomeded transfer scale is the following:

Fail (F): Less than 5
Pass (C): 5-6
Good (B): 7-8
Excellent (A): 9-10
Honours (A+)
