Partido Popular's discourse on immigration

In this seminar, we will explore, from a critical perspective, how a Spanish political party, Partido Popular, builds its discourse on immigration. In particular, we will see how the members of this political party socially represent migrants and how they legitimize and justify their policies, opinions and attitudes towards immigration. In the same way, we will focus on how ideology shapes and determines Partido Popular's political discourse. The aim of these analyses is to offer the necessary tools to assess the role of this party in the formation of opinions and attitudes in Spanish society towards immigration. In order to do so, we will develop a discourse analysis which will focus on semantic macrostrategies, lexical-semantic microstrategies and rhetoric-argumentative microstrategies which emanate from Partido Popular's discourse on immigration.

The results will show that the political discourse of this party projects several prejudices and stereotypes, by means of a highly manipulative discourse determined by Partido Popular's ideology and interests.

The seminar will be held in English (unless all participants are fluent in Spanish language).

Attendance must be confirmed before Monday 13 February to flora.burchianti@upf.edu
