ESF Exploratory Workshop
Migrant Legality, and Employment in Contemporary Europe
Conveners: Sébastien Chauvin (IMES, AISSR, University of Amsterdam)

Date and location: 10-11 June 2010, Amsterdam, Netherlands
This workshop will focus on the relationship between migrant legality and the labour market in Europe. In the twofold context of "chosen immigration" and "earned legalisation," employment has become a key site of focus when assessing the civic legitimacy of immigrants: (i) as a condition for entry; (ii) as a basis for legalisation; and (iii) as a requirement for continued residence. In a cross-national comparative perspective, we will assess how different forms of labour markets, types of welfare states, and regimes of citizenship impact the renewed centrality of work and employment in determining migrant access to legal membership.
