Academic offering

Courses offered

Courses offered to exchange students at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting

1. General matters

1.1 Syllabi

Students admitted to the UPF Faculty of Translation and Interpreting may follow modules within the following programmes:

• The "Culture and languages in Spain today" programme: this programme encompasses a host of modules specifically intended for foreign students offered by the faculty as a supplement and reinforcement to subjects taught as part of the faculty's two specific degree programmes.

• The faculty's specific degree programmes: "Translation and Interpreting" and "Applied Languages".

In addition, students may also follow supplementary courses outside their specific programmes offered as part of the Language Training Programme (PEI) at the university, as well as undertaking one subject per term at another faculty of UPF.

1.2 Level of Spanish

Student eligibility for enrolling on certain subjects depends on their command of the Spanish language. Each student's individual level is determined by the university's placement test conducted prior to registration. Students who have already spent a previous term at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting are exempt from undertaking this test and will automatically be promoted to the next level for the following term provided they pass the respective subject during the previous term.

Students are grouped into four levels according to their command of Spanish:

• Students at intermediate level (Spanish language A)

• Students at advanced level (Spanish language B)

• Students at superior level (Spanish language C)

• Students above superior level (exempt from Spanish language classes in the "Culture and languages in Spain today" programme)

There are no specific classes for students with no prior knowledge of Spanish or those having only a basic level in the language.

1.3 Organisation of teaching

Organisation of teaching depends on the number of credits for each subject:

• 4 ECTS credit subjects:
- 100 hours student study time for each subject.
- The student will have the following weekly classes: one lecture session lasting 1 hour 30 minutes and one seminar class in smaller groups lasting 1 hour.

• 3 ECTS credit subjects:
- 75 hours student study time for each subject.
- The student will have the following weekly classes: 2 hours of classes per week either in 1 two-hour class or 2 one-hour classes.

1.4. Timetables

The timetables for all the faculty's subjects can be seen at the following address: http://parles.upf.edu/llocs/DTCL/public/

1.5 Academic calendar

Teaching at Pompeu Fabra University is organised into 12-week terms, which include 10 weeks of teaching and 2 weeks for exams. The university's academic calendar can be seen at: http://www.upf.edu/estudiants/calendari/

Students on an exchange at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting must ensure that the period of time they spend at the university fits in with the institution's term calendar. In any event, students may not sign up for a subject after week three in any of the three terms.
