Teaching goals

The degree in Applied Languages trains professionals qualified to manage multilingual communication, who are specialised in the field of employment. It leads to a command of the student's own languages and foreign languages, both in the most important verbal areas (writing, correcting, editing, translating, oral expression and cultural mediation) and in handling resources (terminology and documentation management, applied computing, data gathering and processing methods), and reflection on language. The degree enables holders to specialise in any of the following areas: educational environments (learning and teaching languages), business environments (management of specialised multilingual communication), social environments (cultural mediation, linguistic normalisation), description and comparison of languages (both the student's own and foreign languages) and technological applications (development and management of computer programmes applied to linguistic tasks). In short, this interdisciplinary degree course provides the skills required for working as a linguistic technician in institutions and businesses in various areas, press offices, communication departments, text editing, cultural mediation work and language teaching.

Course description

The degree in Applied Languages is a qualification that adapts to the characteristics of society today, which is increasingly multilingual, global and digital. Although it has been on offer in other European countries for several years, this degree course is new in Spain. First, unlike traditional philology studies, this degree provides training in the productive and receptive field in two or more languages so that graduates are able to work in professional environments in which multilingualism is an essential feature. Second, unlike Linguistics or the Humanities, the degree in Applied Languages adopts a highly practical approach, focusing on the communication problems of today. Third, unlike the Translation degree course, which focuses basically on the practice of translation, this degree is more diversified in terms of the work done in linguistics: it not only includes translation work, but also covers the writing, correcting and editing of texts, project management, terminology management, cultural mediation, etc. In short, the degree in Applied Languages provides multilingual, interdisciplinary and practical training for students interested in languages and their applications. It is a degree that fully meets the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (the Bologna Declaration) and is therefore officially valid throughout Europe.

Skills acquired by graduates in Applied Languages

• Excellence in oral and written expression in the student's own language or languages
• Receptive and productive command, both written and oral, in two foreign languages
• Knowledge of foreign cultures and civilisations
• Specialist knowledge in one or more thematic area
• Ability to translate texts of a general nature and introductory practice in specialised translation
• Ability to interpret at liaison level (presentation techniques in liaison conference interpreting)
• Use of computer tools applied to linguistic mediation, and skills involved in the sourcing and managing of information and documentation sources
• Thoroughness in the checking and quality control of linguistic mediation
• Knowledge of linguistic requirements in the social, business and institutional fields
• Use of data collection and data analysis tools in the linguistic field
