Presentation

Teaching goals

According to the various rankings that have been published on the excellence of university studies, our faculty is the leader in its field in Spain. Since it was founded, the Faculty of Humanities has aimed to attract academically renowned teaching staff, and their students have a great deal of enthusiasm for intellectual work: an interest in reading, an ability to summarise and write abstracts, good written and oral expression, and pleasure in creativity.

The aim of our course is to provide a response to the main concerns of our society. It is often said that the world needs people with humanistic education. It is said that the technological and scientific progress of our society is not matched by its moral progress. It is said that people are needed in positions of the greatest responsibility who are able to take decisions in the light of their knowledge of history, thought and aesthetic experience. Studies of the Humanities provide a firm grounding in the education of citizens meeting these requirements.

Studies of the Humanities provide transversality and multiculturalism. We believe that these are essential tools in the education of multi-faceted university graduates, who are able to look at the world on the basis of sound judgement, and who are therefore well equipped to adapt to the professional requirements of a dynamic and complex society.

Description of the course

The syllabus provides a comprehensive grounding in the fields of history, literature, art and thought. Studies in Humanities are a university level educational tool that provides an informed perspective on the contemporary world. They examine the development of the key values that make up what is known as western civilisation and at the same, foster knowledge of other cultural traditions, such as those of the Arab, Asian and African worlds.

The Faculty provides the opportunity to take full advantage of the resources of new technologies for intellectual development and for each person to define their own interests, with a choice from a wide range of subjects. Students' education can also be complemented with study stages at universities abroad.

You will be introduced to the fundamental points of anthropology, psychology or geography. You will obtain an overview of classical culture as well as Islamic and oriental thought. As well as consolidating your knowledge of Catalan and Spanish literature, you will become familiar with European literature, and you will have the opportunity to study English, French and German literature, in those languages.
