The main objective of the degree in Telematic Engineering is to train multi-skilled, flexible, creative and competitive professionals, able to conceive and design, manage and operate multimedia networks, protocols and services, to co-operate with professionals working in related technologies and to take technological decisions based on criteria of cost, quality, safety, time and respect for the principles of the profession.
The degree in Telematic Engineering is structured in two areas: first, it provides basic and sound training in telecommunications engineering and telematics for a subsequent professional career and second, it focuses on digital communication, an aspect which is broadened with the opportunity to take optional tracks focusing on audiovisual systems, software engineering and business management and innovation.
The aim is therefore to provide firmly-grounded training, with innovations, and training applied to new telematic services, multimedia content and digital audiovisuals. The interdisciplinary environment, the relationship with business and the international and research dimensions are essential features of this course.
The degree in Telematic Engineering has been defined on an integrated basis with the other two degrees taught at the Pompeu Fabra University Polytechnic School: the degree in Computer Engineering and the degree in Audiovisual Telecommunication Systems Engineering. This means that the first year is the same in all three courses, and there are many shared subjects in the second year. Students studying his degree course can also take subjects in the other courses as optional subjects.
This syllabus therefore provides sound, practical and multidisciplinary training - which covers the converging technologies in telematics in the extensive information and communication technologies sector - and is aimed at a profile that is more focused on the world of the audiovisual media - which includes disciplines such as signal theory, multimedia communications, databases and data mining. The studies and research undertaken by lecturers on the course enable various areas to be integrated and synergies generated with the existing courses at the UPF, with the aim of constructing a complex whole that integrates technology and creativity. This enables the highest levels of teaching excellence to be attained, which are fully up to date with the constant technological breakthroughs and linked to the business sector and to cutting edge research. It also enables students to become integrated within this context, as part of the end of degree project, involving internship in businesses and other activities.
Graduates in Telematic Engineering from the UPF acquire general and specific skills during their studies. These general or transversal skills enhance the personality and can be beneficially applied in professional life in any social or economic field. These include oral and written expression, in Catalan, Spanish and English, and enable graduates to work in interdisciplinary teams, as well as working independently, with high motivation in terms of quality.
The specific skills acquired by our graduates, which are necessary for working in a technological and business environment, will enable them to have a firm understanding of modern telematic technologies and to adapt to future technologies, which is an essential skill in an environment that changes as constantly as the technology sector.
The course provides the skills needed for a professional career in the regulated fields of telematic engineering, and positions of responsibility in the communications sector: management, project supervision and development, technical services, commercial services, etc.
Graduates in this qualification could work in companies as telecommunications services network operators; in centres, institutions or organisations related to the ICTs; in ICT research centres or in businesses working in the multimedia and Internet sector, among others.
