Teaching goals

The degree in Computer Engineering is structured in two areas: first, it provides basic and sound training in computing for a subsequent professional career, and second, it focuses on digital communication, an aspect which is broadened with the opportunity to take optional tracks focusing on audiovisual systems, multimedia communication and content, intelligent systems, and telematic networks and services.

The world of digital communication is based on computing, telecommunications networks and other basic subjects (mathematics, physics, etc.), and especially their innovative aspects, such as those related with the most advanced Internet applications. This is the basis for the contents of the course: a modern and innovative way of using basic tools, applied to multimedia.

The aim is therefore to provide firmly-grounded training, with innovations, and training applied to new multimedia content, digital audiovisuals and telematic services. The interdisciplinary environment, the relationship with business and the international and research dimensions are essential features of this course.

Description of the course

The degree in Computer Engineering has been defined on an integrated basis with the other two degrees taught at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra Polytechnic School: the degree in Audiovisual Telecommunication Systems Engineering and the degree in Telematics Engineering. This means that the first year is the same in all three courses, and there are many shared subjects in the second year. Students studying one degree course can also take subjects in the other courses as optional subjects.

This syllabus is therefore focused on providing sound, practical and multidisciplinary training that is focused on the world of the audiovisual media. The studies and research undertaken by lecturers on the course enable various areas to be integrated and synergies generated with the existing courses at the UPF, with the aim of constructing a complex whole that integrates technology and creativity in the digital media. This enables the highest levels of teaching excellence to be attained, which are fully up to date with the constant technological breakthroughs and linked to the business sector and to cutting edge research. It also enables students to become integrated within this context, as part of the end of degree project, involving internship in businesses and other activities.

Skills acquired by graduates in Computer Engineering

Graduates in Computer Engineering from the UPF acquire general and specific skills during their studies. The general or transversal skills enhance the personality and can be beneficially applied in professional life in any social or economic field. These include oral and written expression, in Catalan, Spanish and English, and enable graduates to work in interdisciplinary teams, as well as working independently, with high motivation in terms of quality.

The specific skills acquired by our graduates, which are necessary for working in a technological and business environment, will enable them to have a firm understanding of modern technologies and to adapt to future technologies, which is an essential skill in an environment that changes as constantly as the technology sector.

Career prospects

The course provides the skills needed in positions of responsibility in the field of computing and communications: management, project supervision and development, technical services, commercial services... This specialisation also provides specific skills in the digital media technologies, ranging from research to the creation of audiovisual and multimedia products and products of all types for the information society.
