Through UPF's Polytechnic School (ESUP), the DTIC supports degrees in Telematics Engineering, Audiovisual Systems Engineering and Computer Science. At the postgraduate level, the DTIC offers several master's degrees and a full Ph.D. program. Some of these master programs are offered in cooperation with other UPF departments and research institutions.

The DTIC's research activities are organized around 15 groups pursuing a wide range of topics that include networking, wireless communications, multimedia, image and music processing, medical imaging, interactive technologies, artificial intelligence, data mining, and computational neuroscience, among others. The department participates extensively in National and European research programmes, and has active cooperation agreements with other prominent universities and corporations.

The DTIC is sited in UPF's Communication Campus, which was opened in 2009 and is located within the vibrant 22@ technological district of Barcelona. The campus features modern facilities for both research and teaching, in close proximity to other research institutions, industry, technology start-up clusters, and government agencies.
