ABSTRACT:
The aim of this dissertation is twofold. On the one hand, to show
that discourse markers are multifunctional units that serve a number
of functions and play different roles at the ideational, rhetorical,
sequential, and inferential levels of discourse, and on the other,
that their specific use is genre-bound. This study involves a detailed
analysis of pragmatic markers in English and Catalan narrative structure,
and a contrastive analysis of their specific uses in both languages.
The main contribution of this thesis has been to propose the integration
of pragmatic markers within a discourse coherence model. Part I:
Theoretical and Methodological Frame; The Role of Discourse Markers
in Narrative; The Study; Part II: Pragmatic Markers in Narrative
Structure; The Articulation of Narrative: English and Catalan Structural
Differences; Pragmatic Markers in Narrative Structure; Pragmatic
Markers in English Narrative Structure; Pragmatic Markers in Catalan
Narrative Structure; Contrastive Analysis of English and Catalan
Pragmatic Markers; Conclusions.

ABSTRACT:
This dissertation analyses the role played by newspapers in the
process of construction or deconstruction of national identities
in Catalonia. The starting premise is that newspapers are political
actors and, therefore, help determine not only the mental representation
of reality, but reality itself. The data analysed derive from newspaper
editorials where the newspaper's ideological footprints can be traced
down. Two models are adopted: Van Dijk's ideological discourse framework
(1996) and H.P. Grice's co-operative principle (1975), which is
adapted to the mass media. The most important contribution of this
thesis is the proposal of an ideological nationalistic map derived
from the analysis of the explicit and implicit propositions (implicatures
and presuppositions). Only a subset of 5 editorials (out of a total
of 40 from the newspapers considered (El Periódico, La
Vanguardia, El País, and L'Avui) have been studied
more thoroughly from the point of view of their vocabulary, verbal
modulation, identity subjects, and grammatical. This research was
sponsored by Fundació Jaume Bofill and was later on awarded
with the XII Premio a la Investigación sobre Comunicación
de Masas (Consell de l'Audiovisual de Catalunya)(2000).
