RESUMEN:
The aim of this dissertation is twofold. On the one hand, to show that discourse markers are multifunctional units that serve a number of functions and play different roles at the ideational, rhetorical, sequential, and inferential levels of discourse, and on the other, that their specific use is genre-bound. This study involves a detailed analysis of pragmatic markers in English and Catalan narrative structure, and a contrastive analysis of their specific uses in both languages. The main contribution of this thesis has been to propose the integration of pragmatic markers within a discourse coherence model. ANÀLISI CRÍTICA DEL DISCURS SOBRE NACIONALISME I IDENTITAT ALS EDITORIALS DE LA PREMSA DIÀRIA PUBLICADA A CATALUNYA DES DE LA TRANSICIÓ FINS AL GOVERN DEL PP (1977-1996)

RESUMEN:
Esta tesis se ocupa de la participación de los periódicos en el proceso de construcción o desconstrucción de las identidades nacionales en Cataluña. Se parte de la constatación de que los periódicos son actores políticos y, por tanto, codeterminantes no sólo de la representación mental de la realidad, sino de la realidad misma. Se rastrean las huellas ideológicas en el discurs de las piezas donde se concentra la línia del periódico, es decir, los editoriales. Se parte del esquema ideológico descrito por Van Dijk (1996) y se adopta un enfoque pragmático y una adaptación para los medios de comunicación del principio de cooperación de H.P. Grice (1975). El nivel 2 del análisis comporta la elaboración de un mapa ideológico nacionalitario a partir de las proposiciones explícitas e implícitas (implicaciones y presuposiciones); sólo un subconjunto de 5 editoriales (de un total de 40 editoriales de los 4 periódicos estudiados: El Periódico, La Vanguardia, El País, y L'Avui), se ha sometido a un estudio más escrupuloso desde el punto de vista de su léxico, la modulación verbal, los sujetos identitarios, en el sentido lingüístico-político, y las metáforas gramaticales. Esta investigación fue posible gracias a una beca del Grup FUS - Fundació Jaume Bofill. Posteriormente recibió XII Premio a la Investigación sobre Comunicación de Masas concedida por el Consell de l'Audiovisual de Catalunya, en su edición del año 2000.
