UPF's Rambla building

CATALOG '04 will be held in the Rambla building (address: Rambla 30-32) of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, right in the center of Barcelona. The Rambla building is where UPF's Linguistics, Film and AV-Media Studies, Journalism and Translation and Interpreting programs are taught. The entrance to the building is on Joaquim-Xirau Square, a pedestrian square adjacent to the Rambla (access by a Burger King and a 'la Caixa' bank office).

Talks will be held in the Auditorium (Room 110) on the 1st floor of the Rambla building. Posters will be displayed in the building's central covered patio and demos will be run in Room 101, also on the 1st floor. The cafeteria is down the hall from the Auditorium.

UPF's Department of Translation and Philology

The Department of Translation and Philology (DTF) is home to most faculty in the area of language at UPF. Its faculty are responsible for teaching in the undergraduate degree programs in Translation & Interpreting and Linguistics and it also offers a taught PhD program in Multilingual Communication. DTF's research covers areas in formal and computational linguistics, language learning and acquisition, discourse analysis, argumentation, translation theory, history of translation, AV-translation, and comparative literary studies. GLICOM is DTF's computational linguistics research group.

Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a modern university; it was founded in 1990. It is an urban university, located wholly within the city of Barcelona, distributed over several "areas". The largest "area", around Ciutadella Park, is often referred to as the Ciutadella Campus.

La Rambla

La Rambla is perhaps Barcelona's most well-known avenue, with a very crowded central promenade. It runs from Catalunya Square, pretty much the heart of the city, to the harbour, where Columbus Memorial stands. It is a must in any visit to Barcelona.

The Rambla is a popular place for street performers of different sorts, especially in summer: tourists and locals alike often stop to gawk at the artists. This, unfortunately, also makes it a profitable place for pickpockets and other nonviolent petty criminals. However, if you apply a minimum amount of care (e.g., watch your wallets and bags closely, do not flash cash), everything should be fine.
