PhD Program on Multilingual Communication.
The PhD, doctoral program on Multilingual communication: studies in translation,
literature, linguistics and multilngualism of the Departament of Translation and
Philology of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain) aims to train researchers
in the field of multilingual communication from one of the following
specialities: translation studies, literary studies, and linguistics.
Students can follow any of the five
lines of research in which the program is structured, and they
will only need to choose those courses that are necessary for their
specific training:
- Literature (comparative
literature, reception, literary translation)
- Translation (translation
studies, translation and discourse, literary translation)
- Discourse (oral and written
communication, social and specialized discourses, translation
and discourse)
- Acquisition and learning
(second language acquisition, language learning)
- Formal linguistics (linguistic
theory, language description and contrast, computer processing
of language)
The whole PhD program encompasses a period of two clearly diferentiated
academic years:
- The first year (2005-2006) aims to provide a basic postgraduate
training: conceptual and instrumental foundations for research
in the line that has been chosen.
- The second year (2006-2007) aims to introduce students into
research activities, while strengthening the fundamental contents
and methodological tools already acquired.
The PhD program is largely staffed by professors involved in officially recognized research groups. After having
obtained a number of credits in different courses of their choice,
students will be able to undertake introductory research projects
in any of these groups' subjects: in this way they will acquire
their experience in the setting of projects in which research is
carried out in a collaborative manner.
