Admission to the Ph.D. program at UPF requires having completed a minimum of 300 ECTS (graduate and undergraduate). Of these, at least 60 ECTS must correspond to graduate coursework.
In addition, the following requirements are specific to our program:
- To be in possession of a Master's degree and be able to prove a sufficient background in the selected research area.
- To have conducted Master research work related to the selected research area.
- To submit a research proposal matching the selected research area.
- To provide a support letter from the research supervisor. This letter must also justify that the applicant's research proposal matches the selected research area.
- Should the Department’s scholarship not be obtained, the candidate has to provide proof of economic means to guarantee a full-time dedication to the Ph.D. studies.
Other aspects taken into account are: undergraduate grade point average, research experience, professional experience, English proficiency, and agreement between the candidate's interests and the selected research area.
The Graduate Studies Committee of the Department is responsible for the selection of Ph.D. students according to these criteria.

All first-year Ph.D. students must enroll and pass these two mandatory courses:
1. Research seminars. Year-long series of weekly technical talks.
2. Presentation of the Ph.D. Thesis Proposal. It consists of a public examination where the student presents his/her thesis proposal to a committee of faculty from the department. While not strictly a course, the student is expected to work on the proposal for the entire year. The examination takes place at the end of the 3rd trimester.
Once these courses have been passed, the student is expected to work full-time on his/her thesis.
|
Once the thesis proposal has been approved, full-time Ph.D. students have three years to finish their thesis. Part-time students have 5 years to present their thesis, but they are not eligible for most scholarships.

Acceptance notifications will be sent out at the end of July.
All documentation should be sent by regular mail to the admissions office at admissions.doctorat@upf.edu
Potential applicants should first contact the professor responsible for the research area of their interest.
Candidates must submit the following documentation:
