Presentation

The doctoral programme in Law at Pompeu Fabra University offers interdisciplinary training in the legal sciences, in order to prepare and defend a doctoral thesis. The programme has received a mention of excellence (2011), complies with Royal Decree 99/2011 within the Doctorate School of Pompeu Fabra University, and includes the experience obtained from over two decades of education, with thirty-eight theses read in the last five years, supervised by scholars from various Research groups within the Department.

Training objectives

The doctoral studies in law include the preparation and presentation of the doctoral thesis, which consists of original research in the field of legal sciences, and a prior training period involving courses of lectures and research seminars.

The programme aims to train researchers in the legal sciences based on the study of research concepts and methodologies within the various legal areas and disciplines. The objective of the programme is for doctoral students to acquire and develop broad and thorough competences in the various methodological and analytical skills, enabling them to carry out high quality research. A further goal is the acquisition of skills allowing doctoral students to participate successfully in the various forums where they set out the results of their research work.

Academic contents

A total of three seminar lectures will be organized during the first term of the first year. These seminars will be taught by internationally renowned lecturers. A methodological seminar will also be scheduled.
There are a total of 15 credits for the Doctoral programme, and 5 of these are for the defence of the thesis project. Students must present a study between 25 and 35 pages long at the end of the course on the content and method involved in their thesis project, which will be worth 5 ECTS credits.
Students will be provided with all the information on seminars and other training activities organized by the Department and Research Groups during the academic year.

Lines of research of the doctorate

The Doctorate in Law at Pompeu Fabra University includes various research lines by the groups established in the Department of Law. These lines are: administrative law, civil law, constitutional law, Spanish ecclesiastical law, financial and tax law, history of law, private international law, international law and international relations, commercial law, criminal law, procedural law, Roman law, employment and social security law and legal philosophy.

Competences that must be demonstrated at the end of the programme

On completing the doctorate course, candidates must be able to:

  • Achieve a level of competence that includes knowledge and analysis of law as a whole or the different regulatory areas within it.
  • Undertake a critical analysis, an evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas in the field of law.
  • Design and carry out correctly an academic research project in the field of law.
  • Thoroughly apply the research methods used in the legal sciences to the specific area of law that is being studied.
  • Consider and resolve problems applied to law from the theoretical and methodological perspective.
  • Make a contribution by means of original research that extends the frontiers of knowledge of law with the development of a substantial corpus, of which all or part or merits national or international publication.
  • In academic and professional contexts, foster progress in the knowledge of law in its theoretical and practical aspects in a knowledge-based society.
