Presentation

The academic and research master in Political Science has a large research and international components. It is designed to prepare future researchers and political advisors providing them with the necessary training and analytical skills to carry out research in political science. 

The Department of Political and Social Sciences offers students with a clear academic orientation the possibility to continue their studies in a dynamic environment which is clearly oriented towards the international academic and research spheres.

The master is directly linked to the Ph.D programme in Political and Social Sciences, which has received several awards for quality: Firstly, it has been awarded 4 quality mentions by the ANECA (Ministry of Education and Science of the Spanish Government). Secondly, it has been included in the International Graduate School of Catalonia (IGSOC), which is now known as IQUC and is funded by the Departament d´Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government).

Students who successfully complete the master may apply for admission to the Ph.D programme.

The master provides 2 modes, research and academic, that differ only in the weight given to final research project. So, the Research Mode is addressed to the students who are interested in accessing PhD while the academic mode is targeted to those pursuing a deepening of their education and their analytical capabilities in the field of political science.

  • Duration: One academic year, from september to june
  • Structure matters: Three terms (evaluation by the end of the term).
  • Credits ECTS (European Credi Transfer System): 60 ETCS 
    • Module 1:Methodology and Research Techniques (15 ECTS)
    • Module 2:Fundamentals of Political Science (15  ECTS)
    • Module 3:Deepening in some Areas in Political Science (20 ECTS in the academic mode and 10 ECTS in the research mode)
    • Module 4:Final Research Project (10 ECTS in the academic mode and 20 ECTS in the research mode)

 

Academic structure

All students must take modules 1, 2 and 4 and they have choose 2 or 4 subjects from module 3 depending on the chosen mode.

The final research paper will be prepared with the supervision of one of the professors of the programme.

Admission requirements

Apart from complying with the general admission requirements, in order to be admitted to the master of  Research in Political Science, students must comply with the following specific requirements:

  • to have a university degree in the field of social science, law, humanities or health sciences, with a minimum of 240 credits ECTS credits or 300 degree credits.
  • prove that they have a sufficiently high level of English by attaining a score of at least 220 points on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or another equivalent certificate.

Evaluation criteria

The following criteria will be used during the selection procedure for candidates:

  • The candidate´s academic profile in relation to the objectives and contents of the programme. This point will we done according to a letter of a maximum of 2 pages where the candidate will explain his/her fitting in the profile of the master (3 points).
  • Academic record (will be evaluated according to the internal rules of the UPF) (1.5 point).
  • The contents of the two references (0.5 points).

Plagiarism Warning

The Department of Social and Political Sciences will not tolerate plagiarism, copy or active or passive collaboration in this type of dishonest behaviour in papers written by our students. The sanction for plagiarism will be the immediate fail in the course. Additionally, the University will initiate proceedings against the student that could lead to his/her expulsion of the Master.

We will consider plagiarism using someone's words without referencing the source or including the information in quotation marks or a block quote; using someone's ideas without referencing the source or copying papers written by other students.
