Master in Political Philosophy

Presentation

This interdepartmental MA is aimed at holders of a degree in Political and Social Sciences, Philosophy, Humanities and Law who wish to make a start in academic research in the field of Political Philosophy. This programme lets students to acquire the knowledge and abilities necessary to work as political analysts in institutions or political and social organizations, or to enter doctoral studies in this field (you can enter the PhD programmes of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, the Department of Humanities and the Department of Law).

 

Objectives

The main objetive of the MA in Political Philosophy is to prepare researchers in this discipline, with the theoretical knowledge, methodological abilities and the critical and analytic attitude necessary to develop high-level international research and take part in high quality research groups.

Other objectives are:

  • To develop the necessary research competence to enter a PhD programme in Political Philosophy in the best international institutions with guaranteed success.
  • Prepare high-level researchers in the field of Political Philosophy and in the field of research of the Departments of Political and Social Sciences, Humanities and Law, and develop new lines of research within these Departments.
  • Acquire personal competences that improve the chances of the students to successfully integrate in the labour market. 

 

Contents

All the courses are 5 credits ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Modules 1 and 4 are compulsory for all students. Regarding modules 2 and 3, students will need to choose three courses of module 2 and two courses of module 3.

For the completion of the Final Research Paper (module 4) all students will be assigned a supervisor, chosen among all the professors of the programme (with the exception of the visiting professors).

Module 1: Theory and Methodology (15 ECTS)

 

Module 2: Optatives of Political Theory and Philosophy (15 ECTS) (you need to choose three)

 

Module 3: Optatives of Philosophy and Social Sciences (10 ECTS) (you need to choose ten credits)

Schedule 2010-2011

Here you can download the schedule of the academic year 2010-2011. The document has two parts: a calendar which includes the three compulsory core courses and the five optative courses of Theory and Political Philosophy, and an additional list with the schedule and information (credit number, language, etc.) of the Philosophy and Social Sciences optative subjects (all of them belong to other UPF masters programmes).

Prices

On the 20th of July of 2010, the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya has approved the new price decree, which fixes the price of each credit ECTS for Master studies (Politics and Society area) in 30,33 euros. Therefore, the tuition fees of the Master in Political Philosophy in 2010-2011 is 1.923,80 euros for European students and 3.743,60 euros for non-EU students (administrative taxes included).

Non-EU students should take into account that there is an official tax of 200 euros to enter Master studies with a non-convalidated foreign qualification.

Finally, the official tax to get the final diploma is 200 euros.

Plagiarism Warning

The Department of Social and Political Sciences will not tolerate plagiarism, copy or active or passive collaboration in this type of dishonest behaviour in papers written by our students. The sanction for plagiarism will be the immediate fail in the course. Additionally, the University will initiate proceedings against the student that could lead to his/her expulsion of the Master.

We will consider plagiarism using someone's words without referencing the source or including the information in quotation marks or a block quote; using someone's ideas without referencing the source or copying papers written by other students.
