Studies and academic degrees:

Dr. Benet-Martinez is currently an ICREA professor at Pompeu Fabra University's Department of Social and Political Sciences and member of GRITIM (Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration).

Before joining ICREA, Dr. Benet-Martinez was a (tenured) professor at the University of California at Riverside (2003-2010), an assistant professor (tenure-track) at the University of Michigan (1998-2002), and a funded postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California at Berkeley (1995-97). At the University of California she was the founder and director of the Multicultural Identity Laboratory (http://biculturalism.ucr.edu/home.html).

Dr. Benet-Martinez, is an appointed Fellow of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (+7000 members), an Associate Editor for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (ranked #1 in this discipline), and an editorial board member for several psychology journals.

Dr. Benet-Martinez received a B.S. in psychology from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (1989), a Ph.D. in social/personality psychology from the University of California at Davis (1995).

Research interests:

Using correlational and experimental research designs, Dr. Benet-Martinez examines the following issues:

MULTI/BICULTURAL IDENTITY: Dynamics and socio-cognitive correlates of managing two or more cultural orientations and identities; Individual differences in bicultural identity structure; Biculturalism and social-networks; Consequences of biculturalism (social, cognitive, and adjustment-related).

CULTURE AND SELF-CONCEPT: Identification and measurement of culture-specific and -general personality constructs; Interplay of cultural values and personality in predicting wellbeing; Bilingualism and self-schemas.

CROSS-CULTURAL RESEARCH METHODS: Cultural/linguistic issues in instrument development and adaptation; Combined emic-etic methodology; Psychometrics of multi-group cultural comparisons.
