15.10.2015Publication of the book "Foreign Pressure and the Politics of Autocratic Survival" by Dr. Abel Escribà Folch
The book Foreign Pressure and the Politics of Autocratic Survival, written by faculty member Abel Escribà Folch and Joseph Wright (Penn State University), has been published by Oxford University Press. The book examines whether instruments of external pressure affect the survival of different types of authoritarian regimes (personalist, party-based and military) and if the result is a transition to democracy or transition to a new dictatorship. The foreign policy tools analyzed include: conditional foreign aid, economic sanctions, naming and shaming campaigns, human rights prosecutions, and military interventions. The book develops an integrated model that allows understanding why dictatorships fall, how they do so, and the outcome of regime change. This model makes it possible to understand and to empirically test whether democracy promotion strategies can achieve its goal or not. The results of the book are obtained through extensive quantitative analyses as well as case studies that show the causal mechanisms proposed.
