PPPI Grant

The past years have seen worldwide changes in the health and pharmaceutical policy arena, and a growing interest in independent research. In a response to the need for additional support to academic institutions specialising in this area, the Merck Company Foundation created the Program on Pharmaceutical Policy Issues (PPPI). The PPPI seeks to increase the awareness of health care and pharmaceutical industrial policy issues by building upon the existing body of academic research and expanding the number and capacity of academic centers devoted to the study of these issues. The formal grants program was established in 1999, at which point CRES submitted our first official Proposal, joint with Universidad Carlos III from Madrid, in response to an RFP in The Economist.  As a recognised 'Centre of Excellence' the CRES-Merck partnership has gone from strength to strength, with four successful consecutive grant applications, spanning over nine years. CRES share the grant with a small number of other 'outstanding' academic institutions around the world committed to providing education and training, conducting rigorous, independent, policy related research, and disseminating information related to pharmaceuticals and health. Only MIT, Wharton, Sienna and the Universidad Carlos III-Universitat Pompeu Fabra joint project have obtained the grant during its ten years of existence.
