Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Department of Experimental and Health Sciences

Introduction

The Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS) was founded by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in 1998, along with the launching of the new degree in Human Biology. The great challenge of the DCEXS has been to successfully develop a project where research and teaching are firmly integrated, and where scientific research is present for the students from undergraduate studies to the different postgraduate degrees and doctorates. Our aim is to be innovative in education and excellent in research.

The goal of the DCEXS is to become a research centre with international presence and recognition in the fields of molecular biology and biomedicine. The research groups were hired after a rigorous process of selection. A good number of young researchers have been recruited through competitive calls like ICREA or Ramón y Cajal programs. The DCEXS has a remarkable presence in different research fields and a growing research output. It is integrated into the Biomedical Research Park of Barcelona (PRBB), a fantastic concentration of human and technical resources which is called to become one of the important research nodes of Spain.

The DCEXS has pioneered pedagogical innovation and the commitment with the European education and the spirit of Bologna. There are currently programmed different undergraduate and graduate studies in the fields of biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, health and medical sciences (http://www.upf.edu/biomed/ ). DCEXS contributes to the PRBB and the R&D system with its great capacity to train future researchers through its postgraduate programs (http://www.upf.edu/postgraubiomed/ ), with an itinerary devoted to basic Biomedical Research and a PhD program in Biomedicine. This is performed in English and recognized by independent agencies.
