Studies and academic degrees:
Jordi Villā-Freixa PhD in Chemistry (Universitat Autōnoma de Barcelona, 1998). Associate professor at the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Since 2003 he leads the computational biochemistry and biophysics lab (CBBL) of the Research Program on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB). Pre- and postdoctoral visiting researcher at U of Minnesota, U Southern California (EMBO long term fellow), UCSF, U of Oxford, Imperial College London, and the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Warsaw) he is the author of more than 50 articles indexed in ISI WoK. He has coordinated the UPF/UB MSc on Bioinformatics for Health Sciences (2004-2009). He has extensive knowledge on the development, implementation and use of ICT in biochemical research, as well as long experience in scientific training and the coordination of research activities.
Jordi is also the co-founder of aScidea, S.L., Computational Biology Solutions (http://www.ascidea.com)
Research interests:
The subject of interest of our group is the study and characterisation of biomolecules and their interactions by observing their dynamic behaviour using computational methods. This implies the use of different methodologies for describing biological problems at the atomic, molecular, supramolecular and networks levels, emphazising the mechanistic and energetic properties of the systems.
Teaching:
During the period 2004-2009, Jordi Villā i Freixa coordinated the MSc on Bioinformatics for Health Sciences, a joint program of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Universitat de Barcelona, which became official master in 2006. Currently, Jordi Villā i Freixa teaches both undergrad (lecturing Structural Biology in the Biology grade) and graduate students (coordinating and lecturing: Introduction to Mathematics, Python programming, Molecular Simulations and Design and Management of Research Projects, at the MSc on Bioinformatics for Health Sciences; and lecturing in the subjects Introduction to Biomedicine of the MSc on Biomedicine and Didāctica Específica of the Māster de Formaciķ del Professorat d'Educaciķ Secundāria Obligatōria i Batxillerat). In addition, Jordi Villā i Freixa has been invited to yield specialized courses on molecular simulations in Tucumán (Argentina); Concepciķn, and Santiago (Chile); as well as on university enterpreneurship at the Fundaciķ Bosch i Gimpera in Barcelona
