Resident physicians trained at the Mateu Orfila Occupational Medicine Teaching Unit to join the job market
This year, the Department of the Interior, Institutional Relationships and Participation of the Generalitat (government) of Catalonia offered seven positions in labour medicine, four of which ha ve been awarded to residents who have recently finished their studies: the first cohort of resident physicians of the Mateu Orfila Labour medicine Teaching Unit, coordinated by U PF and located at the PRBB. The job placement of the residents is a good indicator of the quality and the training capacity of this unit.
UPF coordinate s the training of resident physicians (MIR) specialized in occupational medicine. The Mateu Orfila Teaching Unit, coordinated by Consol Serra, member of the Occupational Health Research Centre (CISAL) directed by Fernando García Benavides of the CEXS, has the collaboration of a further nineteen organizations, among which are hospitals and public health organizations, such as the IMIM and the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS); mutual insurance organizations, hazard prevention services and other teaching collaborations. An agreement with the University of Texas allows learning, teaching and short stays at the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
The main objective of MIR training is to provide the society with top quality professionals. The MIR programme , planned for the residents of the Mateu Orfila Occupational Medicine Teaching Unit of UPF, is regulated by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and has a duration of four years, during which the residents do clinical, occupational hazard prevention and academic activities at the centres that make up the Unit in order to obtain the speciality of occupational physician.
Occupational medicine is a medical specialization dealing with the prevention and treatment of work-related health problems. Is an essential area in occupational hazard prevention with good professional opportunities.
