Professor Fernando G. Benavides is the new president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology.

Professor Fernando Garcia Benavides, director of the Research Centre on Occupational Health (CISAL) and full professor of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (CEXS) at UPF, was elected as new president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology at the society’s scientific meeting on 29th October.

Fernando García Benavides obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at Seville University (1979) and a Doctorate in Medicine with a special award from the University of Alicante (1985). His main research lines are workplace injuries, psychosocial factors, disability leave, and employment and health insecurity.

As a teacher, he has been a full professor at UPF since 2007, and teaches on the Human benavides Biology and Medicine (UPF-UAB) Degree Courses of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the UPF, as well as postgraduate courses, including the master’s degree in Occupational Health (CISAL-UPF), the master’s degree in Public Health (UPF), the Mateu Orfila Teaching Unit for Work Medicine (CISAL-UPF) and the master’s degree in health and safety in the workplace: prevention of occupational hazards.

During his career, he has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Liverpool (United Kingdom) and McGill (Canada) where he was a temporary part-time lecturer.

The Spanish Society of Epidemiology has more than a thousand members working in the field of epidemiology and Public Health. The main objective of the organization is to promote studies on Epidemiology, to support reputable professional work in all aspects of the field, and to encourage discussion of content and epidemiologic methodology for the benefit of public health.

Since its foundation, the society has held scientific and monographic meetings with the participation of more than 500 professionals in this field of the biomedical sciences.
