Information resources

The Library/CRAI offers you information resources that are associated with the University's teaching and research fields.

There you can find an updated bibliographical collection which is constantly being enlarged, in different formats: books, serial publications, optical disks, DVDs among others. All of the above has unrestricted access and is available for consultation in the different reading rooms.

It also offers you access to electronic information resources through the catalog, the metacercador, and the website:

The website also contains Subject Guides, a selection of information resources relating to the course subjects taught and researched at the University. These guides, prepared by librarians in collaboration with faculty, enable you to:

  • systematically search for links to websites all over the world that are relevant to each of the subject sections,
  • access the specialised databases, e-books and e-journals available in the Library/CRAI,
  • find documents on a specific subject in the Library catalog.

Connecting to the electronic resources from outside UPF

Students to the master and doctoral programmes that have more of 10 credits have the possibility of connecting to the electronic resources it has contracted from outside the University; you will find the instructions for doing this on the page Connecting to electronic resources from outside UPF. Before connecting, read all the information on how the service works and the technical requirements carefully.

Services

Bibliographical Information

The subject librarians, specialising in the areas of knowledge of the University, will advise you on how to find the information and documents you need using the bibliographical information service.

It also offers you several tools for finding and recovering information:

  • the Library catalog: it contains bibliographical references for all the documents in the Library/CRAI,
  • the University Union Catalogue of Catalonia (CCUC): provides information on the bibliographical resources of all the university libraries in Catalonia and those of other scientific institutions,
  • the REBIUN catalog: it links to the bibliographical resources of all the Spanish university libraries,
  • the Metacercador: it permit search simultaneously for information in a variety of electronic resources, such as catalogs, reference databases, digital repositories or subject-based Web gateways
  • the Library & IT Services website: it contains information on the Library/CRAI, the services if offers, suggestions on how to find information, forms and applications for consultations and procedures, as well as a set of subject guides with a selection of resources by course subjects, and
  • the most commonly used Internet search engines.

Borrowing

There is a single borrowing service. This means that documents can be taken out on loan from any Library/CRAI site and then returned to any other site. In this case, IDEC Documentation Centre is like another any UPF Library/CRAI site. There you can reserve, request, borrow up and return the documents.

IDEC students may borrow up to 10 documents at the same time, for a period of 14 days - with the exception of audiovisual and magnetic documents, which can be borrowed for up to 5 days, and recommended bibliography, which can be borrowed up to 7 days. They may borrow, also, restricted documents, marked with a red strip in the spine, but They have to return it at the same day and same location where it has been removed.

Loans can be renewed 4 times in case the document has not been requested by any other user. Trough the catalog: try the option My account, fill in your dates and click the icon Renewal for the items that you want renew. If a user wishes to borrow an item beyond its second renewal, this can be done provided that item in question has not been requested by another user. The borrower can use the normal borrowing procedures when requesting a library material beyond a second borrowing period.

Interlibrary loan

The interlibrary loan service is an essential system for supporting the information needs of IDEC students. It allows them to obtain originals or copies of documents that are not in the UPF Library/CRAI, and request them from other sites. After making the request, the Library/CRAI takes care of finding the document as quickly as possible and notifies you as soon as the document has arrived and is available.

In this case, IDEC Documentation Centre is like another any UPF Library/CRAI site. There you can request, borrow up and return the documents to the Interlibrary loan.

Interlibrary service loans are subject to a series of previously established rates (PDF document).

Rules governing Library use

The Library/CRAI has a Charter of services establishing the services that the Library/CRAI shall provide, its commitment to furnish services to the UPF University community members, and the mechanisms of participation.

Also, the Charter of users rights and duties reflects the mutual commitment between the Library/CRAI and its users, establishing the rights and duties of the latter in different areas, as well as the rules governing the use of Library/CRAI services.

Remember that the Library/CRAI is an area for working, principally aimed at reading and bibliographical consultation. For these purposes, silence must be observed at all times. The Library/CRAI resources form part of the University’s patrimony. Be as careful with it as possible.

If you wish to make a suggestion or clear up any doubts you may have, please ask the Library staff. Remember that you can send us your queries via web through the CAU (Helpdesk) in http://www.upf.edu/bibtic/en/index.html.
