11.1. Access to Global Campus
11.2. Service at the computer rooms

1. Where are the computer rooms and workshops?

There are computer lecture rooms and workshops in all the buildings where teaching is imparted. In the web of the rooms, inside de Global Campus, you can find a list with all the computer rooms at the University, with their location, capacity, and the schedule indicating the hours in which they are open.

2. Personalized entry in the computers of the rooms  (Novell network)

Each time you make use of a computer in a room, you must identify yourself after choosing the operating system. When booting, the system will ask you your username and password so you can use the PC and get connected to the UPF network and Internet..

2.1. Which are the username and password?

The username consists of the letter "u" and your NIS. The NIS is a number of 4 or 5 digits that identifies you in the University. So, for instance, if your NIS is 12345, the corresponding username will be: u12345.

This username (u+NIS) is the same code you must use to enter to the Global Campus.

How can you know your NIS?

In case you do not know your NIS, you can consult it when the time comes to enter to the computers of the rooms.

  • In the log in screen, when asked for the username, write down the letter "e" plus your NIA (the NIA is the number that appears in your UPF card or in the registration document) with no zeros on the left. For example e25297.
  • Press the tab key.
  • The screen will show your new code (u + NIS). Once you have this code in the screen you must go to the password.

The password is your date of birth, with the format ddmmyyyy. For instance: 08021982. You must change this password as soon as possible, and to change it periodically.

How can you change your password?

To change the password:

  • Press at the same time the keys <Control> <Alt> and <Del> of the keyboard.
  • Click on the option Change Password.
  • In a new window you must introduce:
    • The old password.
    • The new password.
    • The new password again (Confirm new password), in order to make sure that you write it down rightly.
  • Click on the OK button.

The next time you enter in one of the computers of the rooms, you will have to use the new password.

The password must have at least 5 characters. You can use both letters and numbers, but you cannot use punctuation marks. You must take into consideration that the characters written in small letters or capital letters are taken as different characters, so you must write your password always in the same way.

2.2. User and password for master’s degree students, students in exchange, and former students

The username of these students is different from the one mentioned above. You can consult your username in the following chart:

Username

Password*

1st, 2nd, and 3rd phase students

u + NIS

Date of birth (ddmmaaaa)

Master’s degree students

u + NIS.

 Date of birth (ddmmaaaa)

Students in exchange

u + NIS

Date of birth (ddmmaaaa)

Former students

u + NIS

Consult the Association secretary’s office

*Remember to change the password as soon as possible.

3. The context in the network

If you have problems to enter a computer following the above explanations, there may be difficulties to automatically identify the context of your user in the network (the context indicates your user’s location inside the network). In that case it will be necessary for you to specify this context in order to be able to enter. The way to do this will depend on the operating system you are using and the kind of your enrolment as a student.

Degree and Diploma students

Doctoral and Masters students

In the place of the username you must write:

Windows

.<usuari>.est12.alu.upf

.<usuari>.est3.alu.upf

Linux

<usuari>.est12.alu.upf

<usuari>.est3.alu.upf

In the place s'<usuari> write the code explained above.
Note that in Windows you must write a dot before <usuari>, whereas you must omit it in Linux.

In order to enter to your personal folder or to the shared folders from your home or from any computer outside the UPF, it is necessary to rightly set up the FTP client with the server name and the user code, according to the following chart:

Degree and Diploma students

Doctoral and Masters students

FTP Server

nwftp.upf.es

User

.<usuari>.est12.alu.upf

.<usuari>.est3.alu.upf

In all this cases, the password is the same that you generally use (see 2.1. and 2.2.).

4. Personal space in the network

Your network connection user gives you access to a server disk space, which is personal for each student. Here you can save the data that you need for your ordinary work, but you are not allowed to store in this space copies of applications or materials under copyright protection, if these are not part of the practices of a subject.

You can have access to this space from any PC in the rooms, provided that you identify yourself with your user.

Windows

Disk drive T:\

Linux

Build point /home/uNIS/novell

<usuari> stands for the user code that you have used to enter in the network from the computer in the room.

The available space is 100Mb (but it can be bigger in case of certain studies or subjects requiring it).

The user must accept responsibility for backups from the personal directory content to the network.

5. Logging out the session

You must log out the session when you cease to use one of the computers of the rooms. Every student takes responsibility for anything made with his or her user account; so if you do not close your session, all the data introduced by the next person working with that computer will be as introduced by yourself. (Moreover, while you have opened a session in a computer, it will not be possible for you to log in from another computer).

In order to log out your session from Windows, you must click on the menu Start > Switch off (at the bottom of the desktop); then click on one of the following options:

Close session

If you want to log out your user without turning off the computer.

Switch off

If you want to turn off the computer.

Restart

If you want to turn off the computer and restart it.

6. Access to Global Campus

The Global Campus is the intranet of the Pompeu Fabra University. You can get there from any place in the world having an Internet connexion (including the computer lecture rooms). You can get there from the home page of the UPF web (http://www.upf.edu).

In order to get access to the Global Campus you must introduce:

·         Your code, which is the same as the access code to the computers of the rooms (e.g. u12345).

·         The password. In principle, this is your date of birth ddmmaaaa). It is advisable to change it as soon as possible, by clicking on the Options button in the Global Campus upper part menu.

Note that the password to enter the Global Campus is not the same used to enter to the computers in the rooms (Novell network). Even in the case you change the Global Campus password, the network password is not changed, and the same happens the other way round.

7. Electronic mail

The Pompeu Fabra University offers you a personal e-mail address that can be consulted from the Global Campus. Note that you will get both UPF official notifications and teachers’ notifications through this e-mail address. So we recommend you, if you generally use another address, to redirect it.

In order to know more about how to use the electronic mail (including the password and the way of getting connected from your home), you must consult the Global Campus by clicking on the Ajuda (Help) button in the upper part menu. Then choose the profile Estudiant (Student).

8. Software programmes

You can use from the computers of the computer rooms and workshops the different applications you need for your subjects.

In order to use those applications, you must open the Novell-Delivered-Applications window. Usually, this window appears minimized next to the Inicio (Start) button in the Windows desktop. Inside it you can find all the available applications, gathered in folders according to themes or types of programmes.

9. Printing

You can print your pieces of work in the laser printers, at the price stipulated by the University. You can consult the operation of the printing system through the Global Campus (Computer Science section).

10. Guidelines

The use of computers in the rooms, as well as that of the network, the user account you have been allocated and, in general, all the computer resources at your disposal, implies to accept the Guidelines for the use of the computer rooms and other computer equipments of shared use, approved by the UPF Governing Body in 4th July 2000.

You can consult these guidelines at the Global Campus.

11. Who can you get in touch with if you have problems?

11.1. Access to Global Campus

When in trouble in the access to Global Campus, open the University website (http://www.upf.edu) and then click the Global Campus button next to the box where the user code is introduced.

11.2. Service at the computer rooms

If you have some problem when using the computers, the Novell network, or the applications, you can get in touch with the Computer Service staff of your building.
